About the Item

Occasional table designed by Frits Schlegel, Denmark, 1949. Rosewood and brass. Unique. Dimensions: H: 52 cm / 1’ 8 1/2" Diameter: 114 cm / 3’ 8 3/4" Provenance: Designed for the Nyegaard Villa Strandvejen, Denmark. The intriguing combination of rosewood and patinated brass is emphasised by the shape of this large occasional table from 1949. The offset slats that make up the round shelf under the table’s surface create a diagonal pattern, which lightens the overall design. The angled, somewhat industrial-looking legs echo the shape of the matching armchairs’ front legs. Together they become a noteworthy set of Scandinavian design collectables. This distinctly modern set was designed by Frits Schlegel for the resistance fighter Erik Nyegaard’s villa on Strandvejen in Copenhagen, a very exclusive road close to the seaside. Frits Schlegel trained as a mason and studied to become an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Frits Schlegel’s oeuvre holds different projects; his furniture designs stand out as works of remarkable craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic.
