Oedipus Coffee Table, Limited Edition by Gabriela Campos

About the Item

Oedipus coffee table, limited edition by Gabriela Campos Edition 1 of 8 Dimensions: 51,18 x 31.49 x 17.72 in Materials: Composition of Marble Travertine + Rosso Sicily + Portogalo A profound dialogue with the work “Oedipus, or, the Crossing of Three Roads” (1951), by Jean Cocteau, this piece translates into sculptural and material language the intertwining of fate, geometry, and symbolism that permeates the Oedipus myth as reinterpreted by the French artist. The composition of the piece directly evokes the idea of a crossroads — the pivotal moment in the myth when Oedipus unknowingly encounters his father, at the point where three paths meet. Here, those paths are represented as architectural planes: stairways leading to different places, angles folding onto themselves, opposing directions that touch and contradict one another. The use of marble, with its chromatic variations between pink and white, reinforces the tragic and sacred nature of the narrative: the dense, silent beauty of the material alludes to the inevitable — to that which is carved into time and cannot be undone. At the same time, the light cast upon the steps creates dramatic, almost theatrical shadows — a gesture that echoes the inner theatre present throughout Cocteau’s work. This table is not merely a functional object: it is a mythological stage. A sculpture that silently narrates the moment when three paths become a single fate. And, as in Cocteau’s work, what seems rational and geometric soon reveals its emotional weight — woven from doubt, crossroads, and revelation.
