Rare C. 1900 Indian Daybed Coffee Table
About the Item
This exquisitely carved daybed now makes a exceptional coffee table. Rosewood was selected for this bed due to its great strength and also its very high density. Dense hardwoods are cool to the touch, like marble, particularly in the heat of the day. Gujarat has a very hot climate and Rosewood chairs, benches and daybeds were especially sought after by comfort-conscious buyers. Beds of this type were only found in high-status households and could be used for an afternoon nap or, with the addition of a cushion, for sleeping at night.
The table is made from two very large slabs of wood, divided by an opening that provided ventilation. The legs are in the abstracted form of gently writhing nagas - a sea dragon from Indian mythology. Large tenons from the legs push through the top, producing what is known as an "honest" joint. The top itself has a very rich patina of scratches and abrasions that developed over time and was not sanded down and lost. It is completely original except for a thin coat of sealer added to maintain the appearance.
The piece makes an excellent coffee table in a great room, recreation room or outdoor loggia.
