About the Item

This bold and impressive Hungarian Art Deco coffee table is newly made according to a vintage 1930s design. Hungarian Art Deco is very similar to French Art Deco but tends to eschew materials like shagreen, parchment, or shiny nickel in favor of domestic materials such as walnut, which Hungary had in abundance. Hungarian Art Deco was simpler than its French cousin and more akin to Art Moderne -or by the 1940's; Mid-Century Modern. This table uses domestic Hungarian walnut veneers quite skillfully and to a dramatic effect. The circular shape is reinforced from every angle and a welcome addition to modern interiors, which can be excessively rectilinear. Though over 80 years old, the design feels fresh and blends easily with contemporary interiors. It is not copied because it is quite difficult to replicate.

A Round Art Deco Dining Table in Macassar Ebony
Located in Chicago, IL
This stunning circular dining table is resplendent in macassar veneer arranged in a starburst pattern. The design consists of 8 pie-shaped wedges formed from 32 pieces of veneer. Macassar, a subspecies of ebony, was selected for its straight grain, high striation, and exceptional hardness. The base is pyramidal, with three tapered legs joined by curved lobes. The piece is truly a marvel of nature and human craftsmanship. The high-gloss lacquer finish accentuates the beauty of the wood. Hungarian furniture makers have been making fine veneered furniture since the Biedermeier era in the early 19th Century. Biedermeier furniture required high-tech (for the time) cutting tools and new application techniques. The technology transferred easily to Art Deco, a style that originated in France but also bloomed in 1930's Budapest. The same techniques are in use today, almost 100 years later. Hungarian Deco...
