About the Maker

Carly Jo Morgan is a Los Angeles based artist, currently focussing on sculptural terrazzo furniture. Morgan debuted her new works at Not So General in West LA, in May of 2017. Her works are reflective of her ongoing study of human evolution, growth and transition. Fascinated by the capability of all species to survive, grow, heal and reproduce through cathartic change, manifested via both physiological and psychological characteristics, Morgan draws attention to this naturally occurring phenomenon of ‘transmutation’ in her large scale and ambitious new terrazzo furniture and lighting. On a purely superficial level, the use of terrazzo physically embodies the nuances of Morgan’s interest. As a material, the terrazzo is created through the laborious and time-consuming process of mixing marble chips with concrete. Once set, the terrazzo is unrecognisable and shapeless until ground down by hand and then deeply polished to create the desired effect, itself going through a transformation akin to ecdysis (reptilian skin shedding). With inlaid brass and resin, Morgan is able to further contemporize the terrazzo with the use of repetitive symbols such as snakes, hands and moons that have a deeper meaning to Morgan and which match the spirituality with a sense of playfulness. A focus on pink and black gives the work uniformity and allows the the viewer to draw their own conclusion for the limited color choice (yin/yang, male/female, heaven/earth).
