Rustic European Solid Wood Table, Europe ca 1940s

About the Item

What was once a drinking trough for animals, is reimagined as a decorative item that can be placed in an interior in need of a rustic touch. This console table is a charming piece with an organic edge. In most mid-century European design, there was an early emphasis on wood as it connected everyday objects, such as furniture to nature. This rustic, solid wood table is a perfect example of this sentiment, and the visual benefits of an understated, organic design. In the case of designs like this table, the Japanese concept of wabi sabi is often brought up. Rooted in Zen Buddhism, wabi sabi emphasizes a perverse beauty in the deliberate imperfection. Wabi refers to the kind of beauty found in the asymmetrical, uneven edges and surfaces seen in the case of this table, sabi is for example the lovely patina of the wood. The tabletop has “wings” on both sides that resemble a trough that enhances the rustic look. At the same time, this feature has a functional perk as well, as items placed on it are more secured from falling off. The top is supported by a pair of trestle legs with similarly uneven, rough edges. The cracks elevate the rustic look, while the height perfectly balances out the thickness of the wood. In rustic pieces, the wood is not overworked, its raw surface and edges are kept to show off the beautiful grain and texture. This is especially eye-catching on the long tabletop. Thanks to the peculiar shape, this table van be used in a variety of ways, including as a display console, or as a coffee table. Its organic charm is sure to stand out in any space. Condition: In very good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some scratches and marks. The wood has a beautiful patina. • Midcentury Rustic Solid Wood Coffee Table, Europe, circa 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
In European midcentury design, there are some common elements that define the continent’s furniture design of the era. Most importantly, there was an early emphasis on wood as it connected everyday objects, such as furniture to nature. This rustic, solid wood coffee table is a perfect example of this sentiment, and the visual benefits of an understated, organic design. Mid-Century Modern represented a break with the traditional past: design-wise, furnishings were often a rejection of Victorian, Colonial, and other historical influences, especially the pseudo-historical use of ornamentation. In comparison, furniture of the 50s and 60s are generally more pared-down, smaller in scale, and uncluttered with unnecessary ornament: on this front, the movement shared qualities with the efforts of the Bauhaus designers’ vehement rejection of ornamentation. This coffee table has a strong elemental feel to it, which is a result of its thick table top and sturdy legs. The focus is on the Material, letting the beautiful qualities of the wood stand out. The circular pattern of the wood is the result of the trunk being used without cutting it into pieces, thus showing the tree’s year rings...

European cabinetmakers and designers created versatile and functional models from solid wood. This cabinet is an exemplary European 20th century design, with a single shelf in the middle. Dividing the space in two, the shelf makes the design perfect to display anything as the sides are made of glass. Delicate objects can be safely stored and displayed on the soft velvet, and visually it creates an accent that draws the eye. The lower part is equally enticing with four thin, Marlborough-reminiscent legs and carved details. The display cabinet style is designed for displaying curios, which are simply collections and treasured items. With its beautiful wood surfaces and velvet accent shelf...
