Sculptural Solid Wood Side Table with Column Base, Europe ca 1940s

About the Item

The side or accent table is the unsung hero of furniture types. Serving not only as catch-alls for drinks, vases or magazines, they are also decorative power players in any room, adding just the right colour or texture to a space. With a sculptural column base this side table has an aesthetic that is historic and modern at the same time. The design is reminiscent of Charles Dudouyt’s 1940s French table model with a similar stunning carved, dark stained oak body. Like that model, here the striking centre column is shaped out of turned solid wood, creating a grooved pattern. The centre column is resting on a circular base with a ring shaped carved motif on its side. The large top has the same ring carvings as the base and showcases the stunning grain of the wood. The circular base creates a grounded look, but as the top’s circumference is larger than the base’s, the table still appears light. The different carved shapes of the wood on the column and the impeccable joinery illustrate the craftsmanship and originality of the designer and craftsman. The solid wood is seemingly shaped into these intricate forms effortlessly with smooth surfaces, a sign of high-quality craftsmanship. Even though they have been altered in form and function with various practices and styles going in and out of vogue, side tables are still beloved today. With the variety of shapes and the beautiful material, this sculptural side table can add that extra textural note to any space or even set the tone as an accent piece. • Wood Turned Chairs with Woven Rush Seats, Europe Ca 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-century designers were eager to break free from the aesthetics of the past and experiment with new forms, and techniques. At the same time, especially in Europe, the modernist design movement was often based on traditional styles and techniques, such as turned chairs. Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in the late 16th and early 17th century. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. In turned furniture, the individual wooden spindles of the piece were made by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they were being spun, or turned between the centre points of a lathe. The construction of this pair is evocative of the more robust Arts and Crafts Movement, featuring subtle decorative elements such as the finials atop the backs. The sphere-shaped finials aren’t the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers and carving on the feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like this pair, rush seats were common. Here, the seats are woven around the frames with a light colour that beautifully contrasts to the dark, patinated wood. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and rush pair...
