Sculptural and rare brutalist coffee table by Arch Eugenio Mondellini

About the Item

A striking vintage coffee table from the 1970s, this piece exemplifies the rational brutalism of the era while incorporating a stark and sculptural aesthetic. Constructed entirely from solid wood, the table is coated in a thick, matte white paint, intentionally applied to obscure the grain and emphasize its monolithic, architectural form. The table takes the shape of a horizontal rectangular parallelepiped, low-slung and substantial, with sharp, clean edges. It appears almost to float, but is in fact suspended by four block-like supports—each made from the same painted wood—irregularly positioned beneath the table’s body. This asymmetrical arrangement lends the piece a calculated imbalance, evoking the tension and raw geometry characteristic of brutalist design. Set into the center of the tabletop is a square metal tray, slightly recessed and flush with the wood surface. The metal, possibly brushed steel or aluminum, introduces a cold, industrial contrast to the matte white finish. This tray serves both as a functional element and a focal point, breaking the monochrome surface and adding a tactile material juxtaposition. The overall effect is one of controlled severity—a sculptural object that operates as both furniture and visual statement, echoing the bold experimentation of 1970s avant-garde interiors designed by the milanese architect Eugenio Mondellini for a private family in Milan. Rockets shooting for the Moon, space stations orbiting Earth and other celestial bodies, chimps dancing around a black monolith... the Sixties and Seventies were embued with an idealized (and sometimes rather odd) vision of the future which, all in all, didn't prove quite as right as one could've hoped. We still have no flying cars, don't commute to the moon on a regular basis, nor we've ever been further away than our lower orbit since the last Apollo mission...
