About the Item

This stunning Art Deco table depicting a shepherd with a sheep over his shoulders, with a golden crook in his hand, is a tour de force of mosaic artisanry. The artist has used tesserae in stone and glass in tones of deep red, forest green, bright gold and silver to compose the scene, interspersed with areas of rough concrete that create subtle differences in level from one area to another. The base is composed of beautifully-forged wrought iron, with a twisted rod beneath the table top, and curving feet that suggest another fine artist at work. Although not signed, the artistry suggests that it was made in one of Italy's finest mosaic workshops in the 1940s.
