Silas Seandel-Style Brutalist Coffee Table with Painted and Gilt Finish, 1970s

About the Item

A very striking and uncommon Brutalist steel coffee table done in the manner of Silas Seandel, Marc Creates, or Curtis Jeré, with hand-painted and gilt finish and original glass top. Abstract sculptural form comprised of welded steel pipes of two different diameters and .75-to-1.5-inch-wide pieces of flat bar steel, all artfully arranged in a way that reminds us of a chaotically-constructed scaffolding or pier, or even a post-apocalyptic building’s framework. Further character is provided by areas of melted metal or solder applied to sections on the flat bars. Finished top-to-bottom in what can best be described as a unique hand-done metallic “camouflage” pattern. It's comprised of raw and blackened steel; matte black, olive green, and grey paint; and metallic gold lacquer and gilding in various shades, including antiqued gold and a light gold that looks almost khaki. The form and finish combine to make the table especially eye-catching, as it can take on a very different appearance as one's vantage point or the lighting changes, all while also casting a complex tangle of sharply angled shadows across the floor. Features its original nearly .25-inch-thick boat shape glass top with flat polish edge. Stands on original nylon-bottom glides. Top sits on black plastic inserts. Dimensions listed are overall. Base is H 15.88 in. x W 43.38 in. x D 22.38 in. Distance between feet is W 30.75 in. x D 20.75, measured from center.
