Svend Aage Jessen Sejer Tile, Ash, and Steel Coffee Table for Ryseberg, 1965

About the Item

A fantastic 1965 Danish Modern coffee table with ceramic tile and stained ash wood top and stainless steel frame by Svend Aage Jessen for Ryseberg Mobler. Sixteen-inch-square stoneware top by Sejer Keramikfabrik—founded in 1947 by Nathalie Krebs on the Danish island of Sealand—is a work of art unto itself. Variously sized sandstone-colored square and rectangular tiles serve as the canvas upon which geometric forms and designs in brick red and burnt umber are incised and impressed. (The second image provides the most accurate representation of color and tone.) Four ash wood slabs—each measuring H 1.75 in. x W 5.88 in. x D 22.5 in.—appear to float around the center, and have a nicely done very dark brown stained finish that retains a handsome hint of grain texture. Their intriguing off-set arrangement and the similarly-aligned exposed stainless steel frame with 1.5-inch-wide flat bar legs strongly calls to mind the classic PK61 coffee table by Poul Kjærholm. Taken as a whole, the sculptural top design, masterful melding of disparate materials, and excellent craftsmanship throughout make for a stylish mid-century modern table with a very contemporary appeal.
