Attributed to Taichiro Nakay (Nakai) for La Permanente Mobili Cantù, coffee table, cherry, maple, lacquered steel, Italy, 1950s
Taichiro Nakay is best known for his participation in the Selettiva del Mobile competition in Cantù in 1955, where he presented designs that skillfully combined Italian and Japanese sensibilities. His works from this period, such as the cabinet and the sofa. share the same stylistic vocabulary and execution as the coffee table shown here. The top is composed of carefully aligned wooden strips, creating a rhythm of parallel lines that visually elongates the piece. The table’s form is spare and linear, but not rigid. The combination of horizontal wooden slats with the curved steel frame produces a tension between rectilinear and organic geometries, hallmarks of Nakay's designs.
