Teak Coffee Side Sofa Table by Johannes Spalt for Karl Wittmann, Austria, 1960s

About the Item

A rare rectangle coffee table in a warm toned teak wood designed by Johannes Spalt for Karl Wittmann, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1960 (late 1960s or early 1970s). A simple and timeless design with clear lines. This table is part of the 'Constanze' living room set which was designed by Johannes Spalt. Chairs with and without arms and a sofa which is convertible daybed were parts of this set. Several 'Constanze' daybeds are available in our stock. About Prof. Johannes Spalt: Johannes Spalt attended the 'Gewerbeschule' Salzburg and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Clemens Holzmeister from 1949. He founded 'Arbeitsgruppe 4' (engl. 'working group 4') together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent, and with Otto Leitner which left in 1953. The groupd was named afterwards the '3/4-ler'. In 1969 he ran his own studio in Vienna, in partial cooperation with Friedrich Kurrent. From 1973 to 1990 Johannes Spalt was Professor of Interior Design and Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and from 1975 to 1979 also its Rector. In addition to designs and realized buildings, Spalt created numerous furniture designs, for example for Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten. Johannes Spalt organized with Max Kurrent the first Adolf Loos exhibition: 1962 in Paris and 1964 in Vienna in the new museum of the 20th century. In 1965 the first Josef Frank exhibition took place in Vienna.
