About the Item

Evoking the sculptural slate tables associated with Paul Kingma, this mixed-stone coffee table was produced in the Netherlands by Van Bennekom’s Meubelfabriek, circa 1970s. The substantial top is composed of hand-cut pieces of natural slate arranged in a harmonious mosaic of charcoal, umber, ochre and grey-green. The irregular geometry creates a quiet rhythm across the surface, while the soft, honed finish keeps reflections muted and tactile. The top rests on a clean, architectural solid oak base that provides warm contrast and excellent stability. To the underside remain the original maker’s label from Van Bennekom (Stadskanaal) and an early retail label referencing Caminada, The Hague—an appealing provenance detail for collectors of Dutch design. With its Brutalist materiality and mid-century restraint, the table anchors a room without overpowering it. Practical as well as sculptural, slate is naturally durable, heat-tolerant and easy to maintain—ideal for daily living: a vase of flowers, art books, or an espresso tray. The piece presents in good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use, including minor edge nicks typical for slate and an oak frame with a gentle, honest patina. A distinctive, one-of-a-kind surface that reads as both artwork and furniture.
