19th Century French Baroque Marble Top Console with Ceruse Finish

About the Item

19th century French Baroque Marble Top Console with Ceruse Finish is a remarkable feat of wood sculpting! Using solid timbers and planks of sturdy oak, the artists created a serpentine form with bowed main apron pierce-carved through revealing a Baroque form with a classical motif design. A floral swag intertwined with a circular scrolled device framed by more floral and foliates that cascade down the double scrolled legs are truly captivating. The shoulders of the legs are carved with different iterations of the central theme, and transition to the pierce-carved serpentine sides that touch the wall with a half scallop shell design. Below we see a contoured stretcher added for strength, and carved with a heart-shaped scrollwork lavished with more floral carvings. Legs are tipped with bold escargot motifs. The subtle painted ceruse finish allows the patinaed coloration of the old oak to peer through the finish, with the white paint accentuating the carved detail for a wonderful effect. On top, a luxuriously veined marble piece has been carefully contoured and triple beveled to follow the complex contours of the framework below. circa 1890s Measures 34H x 30.5W x 15D
