About the Item

Onyx top with mirror polished brass center attacked with acid and brushed brass base. The term folium comes from the ancient Greek phyllon (leaf). The artist wanted to pay homage to nature by representing the physical and functional fusion of the organs of several plants (anastomosis) overhung by their leaves. Jean Arriau is sensitive to everything around him and likes to describe it through sculptures more grandiose than each other. The signature Arriau truly is one of France's most valuable signature. Arriau, with this new serie called "Folium" is placing his work in the excellence of French cultural heritage and collectible design. Born at Nancy (France), Arriau had several lives before becoming a sculptor, founder, metalworker and contemporary artist. In 2013 his love for creation and art, pushed him to open his own workshop in Normandy (France) His workshop of several hundred square meters, allows him to express his creativity freely, and is a continuous source of inspiration. He likes to push back the laws of nature and imagine new forms in order to create unique and exceptional furniture, lighting and objects. Passionate about the work of matter and decidedly organic forms, Jean Arriau, multidisciplinary, sculptor, founder, and metalworker realizes timeless works, always having a sense, a reason to be, and developing the great themes of life. The culture of paradox, of balance in imbalance, the passion for creation, reflection and understanding of life events, leads him to realize unique works, deep in meaning and high in mastery of Matter in all it ways and possibilities. “I have always loved and been passionate about the work of the Matters. My passion for creation allowed me to open my own foundry and metalworking (…) in order to express my creativity freely and intensely. The culture of paradox, of balance in imbalance, passion for creation, reflection and understanding of life events, helped me to create my own definition of all these things through sculptures, furniture, and photographs. I’m inspired by life, the world, everything around us. I feed on everything I see and everything the world has to offer. Whether it is nature, the writings, the music, everything is inspirations in my eyes. The theme of Dysphylaxis, highlighted by the author Primo Levy, represents the guideline of my art. The idea of being one with nature has always struck me as grandiose idea, as I like to say. It is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. I work all types of metal, but also stone, gemstones, resin, fractal resin, or technical concrete. I don’t set limits. I like to capture the snapshot through photography and imagine a brass sculpture in the continuation of it. I like the fact that nothing is frozen, everything can change and untie to infinity. Each piece is signed and engraved with a sentence related to the emotion I want to put forward; I have this perpetual need to create things that have meaning and that provide emotions”.
