Antique Chinese Red Lacquer Console Table

About the Item

Chinese red lacquer console table early 20th century Qing Dynasty. This red lacquer console table has a unique lacquering process where very thin rice paper was used to coat the majority of the table surface then lacquered. The entire surface front and back have been covered and lacquered except the carved apron. This would have been a costly task and specialized detail, sometimes representing a high status or rank suggesting high level of protection, which would follow with the abundance of the dragons carved into the apron. Over time the underneath coating has developed uniquely into a leather type look from movement of the natural wood. The carved apron has three long life prosperity symbols surrounded by dragons representing abundance, protection and strength. Layers of cinnabar red lacquer cover the entire table including the inside of the legs. The tables patina is uniquely individual, gently worn, having the wrinkles in the paper coating coming through. A very beautiful special table with a rich history.
