About the Item

This handsome antique French neoclassical painted console table, circa 1890 showcases a series of motifs that give it a desirable presence in an interior. Completely finished so it may be seen from all directions this Louis XVI style console table has a lovely painted finish with a variety of soft colors that complement the carved design. Please enlarge and zoom on the photographs to see the lavish details on this French console that give it such a distinctive appearance. The front legs are square in shape and taper slightly as they reach the floor while showcasing a variety of carved designs including square medallions, fluting and reeding extending the full length of each leg. The apron follows the neoclassical shape of the top with its straight edges cut with a concave shaped front corner on the left and right. Please look at the ebullient display of open work foliage used to define the apron and how the organic curves play off of the strict geometric patterns on the legs. Set directly in the center of the front apron is a portrait bust of a smiling woman reminiscent of those seen in the classical ruins of Greece and Rome. Her slight smile and flowing hair amidst the natural floral abundance of the apron is lovely to see. The semicircular stretcher set between the legs is quite attractive as it features a neoclassical urn with handles with a floral bouquet standing in the center. As the stretcher moves to the left and right the top is a naturalistic garland of open flowers above a band of overlapping discs known as "guilloche." The contrast between the symmetry of the guilloche pattern and the organic quality of the flowers is charming and identifies this console as being from the Belle Époque period in France. The soft creams and turquoise teal color of the painted finish highlights the lavish detailing of this antique French console table and imbues it with a particular charm. The wooden top has then original worn finish remaining and was always meant to simulate a plain marble top so as not to detract from what was displayed on the top surface. The console table needs to be secured to a wall for stability.
