About the Item

This is a fine antique pair of Russian Neo-classical marble topped and ormolu mounted mahogany console tables, dating from Circa 1840. The Gris St Anne marble tops feature decorative three quarter pieced brass galleries over frieze drawers decorated with brass trim with diamond motif and ormolu mounts. They are each raised on four elegant tapering Doric columns with recessed ormolu fluting united by undertiers with ebony inlaid banding on cone shaped ormolu mounted feet . The pair of beautifully refined proportions and retaining excellent colour and patination. Complete with the original working locks and keys. THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THESE ITEMS ARE MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION. Condition: In really excellent condition having only been beautifully cleaned, polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: height 93 x width 97 x depth 36 Dimensions in inches: height 3 feet, 1 inch x width 3 foot, 2 inches x depth 1 foot, 2 inches Ormolu - Gilt Bronze (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze.The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'. The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object. After around 1830 because legislation had outlawed the use of mercury other techniques were used instead. Electroplating is the most common modern technique. Ormolu techniques are essentially the same as those used on silver, to produce silver-gilt. Gris St.Anne Marble Is a beautiful dark gray marble with lght gray and white markings. The principal quarries are at Gougnies, near Charleroi; and at Biesme, Namur, Belgium.
