Belvedere Console Table, by Aldo Cibic, for Memphis Milano
About the Item
Aldo Cibic
1982
Console in marble, granite, pietra serena. Lacquered wooden drawers. Based on the design of public spaces like subways and stations, Belvedere takes the form of a heavy console in granite, marble and pietra serena. It seems to refer to the classical tradition of architecture in its materials and forms – from the Renaissance (the “Belvedere” of Bramante) to the great Modern masters – with which Cibic enters an abstract dialogue.
Created in 1982 by Aldo Cibic, Belvedere catches the gaze with the composure of well - proportioned geometric solids, underscored by the materials in the finest Italian tradition. Granite, marble and pietra serena remind us of the Renaissance, while the reinforced concrete suggests the Modern Movement. The red lacquer of the drawers, on the other hand, is a direct connection to the Memphis world. Belvedere also impressed the visionary David Bowie, a great admirer of Memphis. This console, in fact, became part of his collection

Trends are cyclical, and even the ones that distinguish an era find a way of returning back in vogue. Memphis Groups design's are a perfect example of how a movement that had top praise during the 80s, could once again regain its admiration in present day 2020. Memphis Milano is the powerful cultural phenomenon of the 1980s that revolutionized creative and commercial logics in design. Born from the idea of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers and architects, in Milan, coupled in the years by famous designers from the international scene, Memphis turned upside down all of the existing parameters on living. Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, design gained a new concept and expression through new shapes, materials and patterns, expanding the creative limits of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design. Its influence is still clear in various sectors of production and beyond.
