Chinese Black Lacquer Wine Table, c. 1900

About the Item

Made for sharing and offering wine and spirits, this small table once gathered together convivial imbibers who engaged in group toasts and robust consumption. Dated to the 19th century, the table is crafted of pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails and screws. The small table features a floating-panel top, simple curved spandrels, and four recessed legs linked by double stretchers. Ideal as a desk or side table, the wine table has a wonderfully smooth texture and has been recently darkened with black lacquer atop its original red-brown finish.

Each leg is carved in the shape of a melon or gourd, symbols of prosperity and perpetuity. This scalloped shape is echoed in the ridged apron and braces, a reference to older traditions of bent bamboo furniture...
