English Regency Monopodia Console, 19th Century

About the Item

English Regency Console. Rosewood, gilded wood, bronze, mirror. First half of the 19th century. Console with a rectangular top with softened edges made of wood that has a waist decorated with gilt bronzes and a band of black architectural elements. In front, it rests on two gilded legs with the head of a feline (leopard or panther), plant decorations and a lion's claw finish; the back features a rectangular mirror. The base repeats the scheme of the upper area, and is also decorated with golden appliqués. Although the model shows the influence of the French Empire consoles common at the time, the details such as the wooden tabletop, the dark lines, the felines on the front, etc., are more reminiscent of English examples from the Regency period, named for being situated at the time when the future George IV was Prince Regent (1811-1820). Compare the feline paws with illustrations by Charles Heathcote Tatham (1772-1842) and Thomas Hope (1769-1831), and with furniture designs by George Smith (1756-1826). · Size: 99x38,5x93 cm International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.
