Fine Louis XVI Revival Console Table by Harry & Lou Epstein

About the Item

A fine quality Louis XVI style gilt bronze ormolu and porcelain mounted richly figured solid wood console table by Harry & Lou Epstein (H & L Epstein, London) Exquisitely hand-crafted in England in the first half of the 20th century, exceptionally executed in luxurious Louis 16th Revival taste, having a demilune marble top with attractive color and veining, over a shaped apron embellished with finely chased and chiseled gilt bronze mounts and eleven Sevres style hand painted medallions depicting courting couples, after Jean-Honore Fragonard (French, 1732-1806), rising elegantly on gilt brass adorned long fluted and tapered legs. Attributed, no apparent signatures, typical of this period Epstein furniture. circa 1940 Dimensions: (approx) 31 3/8" High, 38 3/8" Wide, 13 7/8" Deep The Epstein Brothers: The furniture company was originally founded by Polish immigrants that moved to East London in the 1890s and became famous for quality Art Deco Modern furniture from the 1920s to the 1950s. Most of their furniture items were special order and custom made using the finest quality materials such as burr maple, sycamore, walnut veneer and porcelain mounts. By the end of WW2, they had showrooms in London, Manchester and Glasgow. Their trademark style became conservative Art Deco with most of their pieces being made from bleached walnut. During the Art Deco period the Epstein brothers traded under a variety of business names, both individually and in partnership with one or other of their brothers. Examples from the first half of the 20th century were not signed. From the 1950s, some pieces were labelled ‘H. & L. Epstein Ltd’ or ‘Epstein & Goldman’. A console or sofa table produced by Epstein does not only look good, but its impressive craftsmanship and quality gives it longevity, with care examples will last a few lifetimes so can be handed down through generations.
