French Empire Gilded Wood Marble Topped Console Stamped Belange

About the Item

A period French Empire gilded beechwood console having a white marble top and mirrored back. The console has two front turned legs with carved decoration to the top and bottom. The frieze is decorated with a carved central rosette between entwined anthymions. The back legs are similarly carved. The console retains its original water gilding and bears the stamp of its maker Bellange at the back left top hand corner. The console has been completely and professionally restored. Pierre-Antoine Bellangé (1757-1827) was a French ébéniste (cabinetmaker) working in Paris from the mid-18 century to the first quarter of the 19 century. He is best known as the official supplier of "Imperial Furniture" not only in France but in all of Europe during the first quarter of the 19 century. Some of the more illustrious and important historical places that were furnished by Bellange include the Tuileries and Malmaison in Paris and Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace in England. Napoleon's own Chateau Saint-Cloud near Paris also housed a lot of Bellange furniture but none of this survives today as the chateau was burnt down during the Franco-Prussian War between France and Prussia in the 1860s, In more recent memory Bellange was given a huge publicity plug by none other than the American First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy during her commentary for CBS TV tour of the White House in 1962. In 1817 President James Monroe of the United States purchased a suite of Bellange furniture for the White House. This suite of furniture which includes an almost identical console to the one offered here is now in the Blue Room. The Blue Room is one of three state parlors on the first floor of the White house and is distinct for its oval shape. The room is used for receptions, receiving lines and is occasionally set for small dinners. The Blue Room is furnished in the French Empire style. A series of redecorating through the 19th century sadly resulted in most of the original pieces in the room being sold or stored away. The Bellange console was luckily one of the pieces that was kept and was rediscovered by Jacqueline Kennedy in the White House basement. It was restored by Jansen & Cie. and installed back in the Blue Room in 1961. Refer to photo gallery last two photos.
