French Giltwood Console of Louis XVI Style Late 19th Century

ITEM: A FRENCH GILTWOOD CONSOLE SPECIAL FEATURES: OF LOUIS XVI STYLE MATERIAL: GILTWOOD PERIOD: LATE 19TH CENTURY "Dimensions: 35 in. (89 cm.) high, 73 ¾ in. (187.5 cm.) wide, 24 in. (61 cm.) deep The top is made of white and grey marble above a frieze decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves and draped with garlands. It is fixed on four legs joined by a shaped stretcher and a swag-draped urn. Louis XVI furniture is characterized by elegance and neoclassicism, a return to ancient Greek and Roman models. Much of it was designed and made for Queen Marie Antoinette for the new apartments she created in the Palace of Versailles, Palace of Fontainebleau, the Tuileries Palace, and other royal residences. The finest craftsmen of the time were engaged to design and make her furniture.
