Large 18th Century Painted Italian Demilune Console Table

About the Item

This antique Italian neoclassical console table is majestic in height, standing at over 41 inches tall. demilune in shape, this table would make a great addition to a large entryway or foyer. Produced in the late 1700s, the console has a top made of “flame” satinwood veneer. Flame occurs when the wood grain grows in an irregular pattern which produces wavy lines that have a shimmering quality and the appearance of fire. Along the front edge of the surface, there is a decorative arching band which conforms to the shape of the table. It is composed of a complex inlay featuring a tied bow with the ends of the ribbon continuing in an undulating motion in both directions, interspersed with floral vines. In the center of the tabletop and towards the back, is an unusual motif of a large fan-like batswing with laurel leaves and delicate flower buds. The rest of the console is carved pine that is gilded and painted green. The apron immediately below the tabletop tells the story of two putti carrying a basket of fruit while being flanked from both sides by an assortment of mythological creatures, most notably dragons and griffins. We also see what appears to be dogs or foxes, and finally small birds as you approach the sides. In ancient folklore, dragons and griffins were both said to be treasure hoarders, possibly indicating that they seek the “fruit basket of abundance” held up by the putti. The dragons also tie back to the inlaid batswing on the tabletop, as dragons are often depicted in art with bat-like wings. The putti and the animals are shown traversing and perched across a landscape of flowing foliate and floral vines and cornucopias. The table sits on 4 fluted legs adorned with beading, margent acanthus leaves, and reeding, all of which are highlighted in gold against the green paint. The legs are joined together by flowing acanthus leaf scroll stretchers that terminate in a half urn finial. This intriguing console has wonderful details and is exceptionally tall, making a grand impression. It can be placed by itself or be used as a table to showcase smaller antiques and works of art.
