Pair of 18th Century Walnut Demi-Lune Consoles or Dining Table, Piedmont, Italy

About the Item

Open lyre legs and fretted stretchers are hallmarks of demi-lune consoles from the Piedmont region of Italy, as seen on this pair of walnut tables dating to the 1700s. The curvaceous legs with scrolled feet are enhanced by the sinuous stretcher whose connectors are set askew. They would make fantastic additions to a hallway, entry, or living room. Later modifications to the consoles also allow them to function as the ends of a curved dining table. Carved mortises have been affixed to the back side of each console, providing sleeves for a pair of cross supports that connect the consoles. Additionally, a pair of table leaves with interlocking tongues and grooves fit directly onto the supports, completing the dining tabletop. All four sections are further secured by a series of eyelets and latches that have been installed to the undersides. The result is a uniquely, but well-engineered dining or breakfast room table that can seat six adults comfortably.

Early 18th Century Painted Italian Console Table with Rouge Royal Marble Top
Located in Dallas, TX
Console tables are beautiful, graceful tables that also serve a practical purpose. These tables are aligned against a wall, often between two windows and/or placed beneath a mirror. You might find accessories or artwork resting on the marble or wooden tops. During the Regence period, these tables would often be painted to match the colors of the wood paneling of the walls, indicating that this console table came from an opulent room. Hand-carved in Italy during the 1700’s, the wood has a lacquered white finish with gilded highlights. The rouge royal marble from Belgium has white and gray veining and light inclusions with a quarter round finish on three sides (like most consoles, the backside is typically left unpainted or raw – as this is the side that abuts the wall). Beneath the thick marble are four cabriole legs with pied-de-biche (deer’s foot...
