About the Item

This pair of Empire console tables features unusual, turned mahogany legs in the front that are decorated with beautiful, fire-gilded bronze fittings. There is a large drawer within each table frame as well as a thin shelf adding structure. The keyholes are also adorned with finely chiseled bronze figures of two intertwined swans, a striking detail that contrasts with the otherwise minimalist architectural form. The unique height of the console tables is perfect for an entryway — elegant yet stable. The legs' unusual design is reminiscent of the work of the cabinetmaker Jacob D. Rue Meslée. Jacob D. Rue Meslée, was a celebrated French ébéniste who rose to prominence during the Napoleonic era. Renowned for his exquisite neoclassical furniture, he crafted pieces for Emperor Napoleon and Empress Joséphine. His workshop, inheriting the legacy of Georges Jacob, became a hub of imperial craftsmanship, blending fine marquetry, gilt-bronze mounts, and elegant design. From ornate commodes to stately armoires, Jacob's work exemplified refinement and royal taste, leaving an indelible mark on early 19th-century French decorative arts.
