Pair of French 19th Century Painted Louis XV Style Console Tables

About the Item

This exquisite pair of small French console tables were hand-carved in France in the 1800’s in the Louis XV style. The wood has been painted cream/gray while several elements, such as oval medallions and volute scrolls, have been embellished with gilding. Each console has a hand-shaped marble top that is roughly 9 x 9 ½. The white marble with gray veining has three layers of beveling. The wood aprons are adorned with a lozenge diapered background and a central medallion. The medallion consists of a pierced floral center surrounded by gadrooned and curled leaves and a beaded leaf margent. The sides have similar carvings, but without the margent. There are two volute leaves on each side of the apron that extend down to the leg and terminate in floral margents. The upper section of the legs is convex, while the lower section is concave. The ends of the two sections come together in a volute scroll (upper section) and a curled leaf (lower section). The convex volute feet rotate towards the interior and are festooned with a curled leaf and a central oval medallion. The cross stretcher connects the feet just above the medallions and has a lovely “noix” floral arrangement on top of a pair of volute scrolls. These small consoles are easy to place in nearly any room. If not placed along the same wall, one could be mounted in a bedroom, for instance, while the other in a powder room, with a small vase on top of it. While not period Louis XV, they are a quite old as evidenced by the interior frame and rear mounts. They date to around 1850 or slightly earlier.
