Period French Louis XVI Carved Oak and Marble Demi Lune Console Table, C. 1785

About the Item

Hand-carved during the Louis XVI period, circa 1785, this oak demi-lune console is topped by a reddish brown marble with gray, black, and cream veining. Typical of tables from this era, the ¾” inch-thick marble is supported by four slender column-like legs with onion feet that appear especially tall due to their thinness (when compared to robust table legs seen in preceding periods). The marble has a sophisticated quarter-round molding that slightly overhangs the detailed frieze beneath. Intricately carved niches, filled with stylized chaffs of grain and separated by roundels beneath leaf cups, adorn the apron, all set above a row of beading and foliage. The repeating motifs envelop the curved façade, interrupted only by rectangular rosettes that align with rings of gadrooning and olive branches at the top of each fluted leg. Our small and slender Louis XVI oak and marble demi-lune console can be placed in an entry hall, living room, or library, adding elegance to wherever it is utilized.
