American Federal Antique Mahogany Circular Card Table, circa 1800

About the Item

With wonderful ruby red color brilliant throughout the solid mahogany and mahogany veneers of the surface, this is a subtle table that is almost entirely free of embellishment other than the angular stringer inlays along the edges and framing the panels. The checkered inlay along the lower edge of the apron is generally related to works from Pennsylvania and Maryland, this form most often associated with the Baltimore work center. As a folded table the form is a perfect pier table, but most convenient to the period was it's round form for comfortably playing cards in the evenings. The table remains in excellent condition with only small veneer losses. The underside is nearly untouched with a wonderful nut brown oxidization to the exposed surfaces. Turning the table upside, the apron is cut out of laminated blocking beneath the veneers with applied mahogany edging affixed with cut iron nails; screws set in wells affix the top to the frame. A single fore-aft brace stretches from the back with a tenon and locks into the front with a small dovetail. Illegible inscriptions are on both planes of the underside of the top. The back rail appears to be poplar (not micro-analyzed and hard to examine with the dark oxidization), dovetailed on both sides into the apron and affixed to the oak gating rail with four original hand cut screws at the center. The fly-rails allow both back legs to open and create a perfectly stable playing surface. For homes that are decorated in the Neoclassical taste of the Federal Period, this airy and light form is an absolute jewel to look upon and enjoy. Fully functional and in excellent condition, this is a piece that was crafted to last the test of time. With a focus on color and straight unembellished lines, this piece melds very nicely with both modern and classical interiors. Measurements: 35 7/8" W x 17 5/8" D x 29 1/2" H [closed] Condition Report: Patch repair to hinge blowout on interior left hinge. Right hinge with old hairline crack. Inlay patch to right rear leg cuff and right edge of apron inlay. Other small stringer inlay replacements and losses. Repairs inside of front legs to old cracks. Some screws inside structure replaced, several original hand cut screws retained in frame. Front left leg with a slight inward cant when viewed straight on.
