About the Item

This is a fine George III English mahogany demilune table with two drawers that swing out. The George III style produced exceptional quality pieces that many collectors have deemed the finest examples of furniture design. During this time Georgian furniture makers preferred mahogany over walnut, making it the main wood of choice. This table is carved entirely from mahogany, which gives it its natural deep mocha coloring as well as its exceptional durability. The top is crafted in a half-moon shape, called ‘demilune.’ These tables were popular during the time, acting as an accent table or substituting for a console table. This finely crafted table has an elegant rounded front skirt and another demilune leaf that converts to a perfect round table. It is outfitted with four slender cabriole legs ending in padded feet. The brass leaf-like motifs on the pulls are common to the style. Many demilunes did not have storage because of their slim silhouette, making this one rare. The clean, symmetrical lines and curves, create a pleasing look, even though the overall design is quite complex. It would look great in a bedroom, hallway, or even sitting area. To transform the demilune into a round tea table, the gateleg needs to be positioned perpendicular to the front leg of the demilune, with brass pulls on each side before the first leaf is lowered onto the bracket while forming a 90-degree angle to the table base to create a round tea table made of two lustrous mahogany half circles. There is a slight gap between the two leaves forming which is normal due to its age. The table has been restored by a professional conservator to optimal condition for its age and is ready to be enjoyed to the fullest! Round Table: H=28 in. D=57 in. Total weight 40 lbs.     Repaired: Some chips on the edges near the hinges where the table leaves flip (see images) from incorrectly flipping the leaves without putting the gateleg out first for support. The top leaf has been repaired on the left side around the hinge (see image). Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Slight signs of woodworm on the right drawer, however, it has been eradicated. Hinges have been tightened. Freshly waxed. H=28 in. W=30 in. D=15 in. 40 lbs.

This is an elegant hand-crafted mahogany George III multifunctionality corner table. During this time, corner tables became popular, due to their multi-functional and space-saving characteristics. They easily transform into a square multi-use: tea table, card table, reading table, tea table, etc. Completely utilitarian and space-optimizing, it could be placed in any room and provide many uses. It features an isosceles triangle top with a rear drop leaf. The drop leaf, supported by a gate leg, swings out to expand into a square surface. An oval-shaped brass escutcheon on the plain frieze hints at a compartment. Indeed, opening the lock allowed the top to lift and reveal storage space. It rests on four marlborough legs, another stylistic element of the era. One can use it in a living area and store board games in the storage compartment or use it as a desk or tea table and put it away in a corner when done.
