19th Century French Renaissance Writing Desk
About the Item
19th Century French Renaissance Writing Desk is a wonderful example of the genre, refined over the course of centuries and in this example inspired by the revival of the Renaissance style. Crafted entirely out of old-growth oak, it features a surface that is the right size for a home office, study, student's desk, or as a convenient table anywhere in the home or office. Mitered corners ensure no sharp edges present themselves into the traffic pattern of the room. The entire top is also gadrooned with acanthus leaf motif, overlooking an apron that is carved on all four sides with an elongated egg pattern, interrupted by lions' heads on each of the mitered corners, and at the center of the full width drawer to serve as the drawer pull. Each of the lions on the corners also hold brass rings in their mouths, a common affectation of the style. Support is provided by four large carved urn pediments enhanced by an apron with carved corbels and pendant finials. The base is a classic "H" shape, but with a boldly carved trestle and whimsical expressions of dolphins serving as the four feet.
