19th Century German Gründerzeit Nutwood and Burl Writing Desk Secretary

About the Item

A small German "Gründerzeit" (Wilhelminian) period desk with attachment or secretary from the 2nd half of the 19th century. Walnut and burl veneer on pine. Above the two-door side-cassetted lower part with a large drawer, a roller shutter covers the desk top when closed. This can be pulled out with 2 recessed grips on the underside, so that the furniture can still be used practically for working, even by today's standards. The work surface is still covered with the original gold-pressed leather. Behind it are 2 small drawers, as well as various small storage compartments, which were originally used to store ink and stationery. By removing one drawer and the central storage compartment, another secret drawer can be pulled out in the middle. This is hand-signed by the maker on the underside in Sütterlin script with the date 1869. Above the work surface there is a raised central superstructure with 4 curved turned columns, crowned by a profiled curved cornice with a central cartouche. A mirror veneered arched double door with moulded profile frame decoration is flanked by 3 overlapping curved drawers on each side. Including 5 keys that fit all locks. The shutter lock is missing. Dimensions: 78 cm (desk top) or 162 cm (max.) high / 30.71 inch (desk top) or 63.78 inch (max.) high, 98 cm wide / 38.58 inch wide, 65.5 cm or 95.5 cm (with extended desk top) deep / 25.79 inch or 37.6 inch (with extended desk top) deep. The furniture can be transported in 2 parts (base and top). In the course of the restoration, the following work was carried out on the furniture: Various glued joints. Key bushings added. Running functions of all drawers checked and restored if necessary. The back panel was re-slid in, extended and re-fastened. Loosened joints on the carcase fixed. Door hinges adjusted and missing parts added. Missing knob re-turned. Missing profile strips added. Crack in the desk top filled and retouched. Surface cleaned and polished.
