About the Item
An exceptional late 19th century gilt bronze Mounted Louis XV/XVI Style Exhibition Bureau a Cylindre By Henry Dasson
Henry Dasson – Thought to be made especially for Dasson’s stand at the Paris Exhibition of 1889.
The rectangular top with pierced three-quarter gallery, above three frieze drawers, with the center drawer opening to a hidden leather book holder, bronze mounts consisting of falling flowers, sunflowers and acanthus leaves, the shutter tambour opening to reveal an interior fitted with six compartments and two letter trays, with pull-out black leather-lined writing slide, above a knee-hole with a center frieze drawer flanked by two large and deep drawers, the paneled back and sides each fitted with a leather-lined slide, the cabriole legs with scrolled acanthus clasps running to lion paw feet.
Stamped HENRY DASSON 1889 numerous times on the underneath of the carcass.
The present bureau à cylindre is a copy of the model by Jean-Henri Riesener (maître 1768; d. 1806) commissioned in July 1784 by Marc-Antoine Thierry de Ville d’Avray, Intendant Général des Meubles de la Couronne. The following year, the desk was sent to the château de Fontainebleau, where it was used by the Comte de Provence, the future Louis XVIII. Following the Revolution, the desk was not sold but remained in the Garde-Meuble until the Restauration when it was moved to the Palais de Tuileries, and to the cabinet de toilette of the Comte d’Artois, the future Charles X. Towards the end of the 19th century, the desk was copied by many of the best Parisian ébénistes, among them Henry Dasson.
Henry Dasson was considered one of the finest makers of gilt bronze mounted furniture in the nineteenth Century. He established a workshop at 106 rue Vieille-du-Temple, Paris, and specialised in the production of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI style furniture using the very finest ormolu mounts with the highest quality mercury gilding. In 1871, Dasson purchase Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen business and remaining stock.
Dasson exhibited at the 1878 and 1889 Paris Exhibition. He displayed Louis XV and XVI styles as well as pieces of his own modified eighteenth century design. The exhibits in 1878 included a table entirely in gilt bronze, purchased by Lord Dudley.

Rare Late 19th Century Gilt Bronze Mounted Bureau Plat Attributed to Zwiener
By Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener
Located in Long Island City, NY
An exceptional and rare late 19th century gilt bronze mounted Louis XV Style Bureau Plat Attributed to Zwiener
Attributed to Joseph Zwiener
The serpentine case with a rectangular top with gilt-tooled leather writing-surface within a molded border above a quarter-veneered frieze, three drawers to the front and three simulated drawers to the reverse each flanked by a large putto, the sides centered with a fine bronze Apollo mask, the cabriole legs mounted with sea shell bronze designs with foliate-cast sabots.
Born in Herdon, Germany, in 1849, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener followed the tradition of some of the best ébnistes of the nineteenth century. He moved to Paris establishing a workshop at 12, rue de la Roquette, between 1880 and 1895. He produced a wide array of the very finest furniture, modelling in his own interpretations of the eighteenth century Louis XV Rococo style, veneered with the highest and finest quality marquetry and ‘Vernis Martin’ panels. Exhibiting at the Exposition Universelle, Paris, in 1889, Zwiener was awarded a gold medal for what the jury reported as ‘dè ses dèbuts à une Exposition Universelle, [il] s’est mi au premier rang par la richesse, la hardinesse, et le fini de ses meubles incrustés de bronze et fort habilment marquetés.’
Zwiener was closely associated with François Linke, and the two houses produced work which, at first glance, is remarkably similar and with occasionally identical mounts. The similarities are made more likely by the fact that the brilliant sculptor, Léon Messagé, worked initially for Zwiener and subsequently, upon Zwiener’s departure for Berlin to work on furniture commissioned by Freidrich Wilhelm II , he was employed in the workshop of François Linke. It appears that Zwiener, unlike Linke, did not sign all his work, although some stamped pieces with his name and/or his “Z” initial are documented. There is some uncertainty between the recorded stamp E. Zwiener and the work of a Julius Zwiener...
