19th Century Louis XV Style Ormolu-Mounted Bureau Plat by Maison Krieger

A fabulous quality 19th century ormolu-mounted bureau by Maison Krieger. Serpentine top with brown leather writing surface, the frieze set with three drawers, the reverse with false drawers, the interior of one drawer with plaquette engraved KRIEGER PARIS, one lockplate stamped STREMLER PARIS. On foliate-clasped cabriole legs. Maker: Maison Krieger Origin: Paris, France Date: late 19th century Dimension: 31½ in. high; 64 in. wide; 32¼ in. deep Notes: Maison Krieger was founded by Nicolas and his brother Antoine Krieger in 1826 in Paris, France. The business became Antoine Krieger et Cie. In 1850. Antoine Krieger died in 1856 and his son-in-law took over the company and changed the name to Maison Racault et Cie, subsequently H. Racault et Cie; Colin Damon et Cie in 1870, Damon, Namur et Cie in 1875, Damon et Colin in 1892 and finally Cosse-Racault et Cie. Maison Krieger produced and exhibited numerous styles of furnitures such as unique creations of eighteenth-century style designs alongside stylized interpretations of the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. They exhibited at the major exhibitions of the 19th century up to the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

    A very fine and large French 19th century Louis XV style ormolu-mounted mahogany and kingwood three-drawer bureau plat attributed to Paul Sormani (French-Italian 1817-1877). The shaped rectangular top enclosing a gilt tooled brown leather writing surface within a molded border above a long central drawer enclosing a fine modeled mask of Hercules wearing the Nemean lion pelt centered by flat cast encadrements and rosewood veneered a quatre faces flanked by two short drawers with reticulated escutcheons of scantly clad frolicking putti and doves over gadrooned "C" scrolls, trellis patterned panels on a stylized shell within similarly framed encadrements raised on elegant cabriole legs surmounted by bearded satyr masks ending in acanthus case hairy paw feet beneath sides centering bacchic masks. Lock mechanism stamped W S M, 6068, a key (lacking skeleton key), and 148. Veuve Paul Sormani Et Fils was the widow of the highly esteemed furniture maker Paul Sormani (French-Italian 1817-1877). After his death around 1877 she and her son took over the management of the company continuing the tradition of producing fine French furniture of the highest calibre. An escutcheon and several mounts were examined on the reverse, and each was found to have the bronze master model initials "SJ:. Blue chalk inscription on underside Glle 117, Paris, circa 1880.
