19th Regency Brass-Inlaid Portable Writing Desk on Later Stand, Secret Drawer

About the Item

Regency Brass-Inlaid Portable Writing Desk on Later Stand, with Secret Drawer, Possibly by Thomas & William Lund A fine English Regency period portable writing slope, early 19th century, crafted in figured mahogany with elaborate brass inlay, corner strapping, and campaign-style hardware. The hinged top opens to reveal the original green baize writing surface and a compartmented interior, including a concealed well hidden beneath a removable board. A recently discovered secret drawer, cleverly integrated into the casework, further underscores the quality of craftsmanship associated with top London box makers of the period. This campaign-style writing desk is mounted on a custom later stand, allowing it to function beautifully as a side table or decorative accent. While unsigned, the refined brasswork, fitted compartments, and secret drawer are consistent with the work of Thomas & William Lund, or a comparable Regency-era London workshop. Materials: Mahogany, brass inlay, green baize, oak (later stand) Dimensions: 24" H x 20.75" W x 11.5" D (overall) Features: Hinged writing surface, internal storage, removable board, secret drawer Condition: Good antique condition; missing key, minor inlay losses and lifting, wear and scuffs consistent with age. The small tab that supports the writing lid is no longer present, but the box remains structurally sound and highly decorative. Provenance: A Private Collection, 3 East 71st Street, New York City
