Imperial French bureau plat or desk by Charles Boulle
This model was built by the most important and history-writing court carpenter Louis IV, Charles Boulle.
Polished tulip veneer on solid beech and oakwood. Extremely finely chiseled bronze. Slightly protruding, profiled table top and gold-embossed leather inlay, flanked by a grotesque mask on each corner. Three-lobed frame base with a wide knee compartment on four cabriole legs with imposing espagnolettes / female busts ending in sabots.
Middle drawer with a female mask escucheon centered, flanked by a bearded mask and drawers, the back with simulated drawers, the sides each centered by a satyr mask.
