About the Item

This is a superb antique Victorian burr walnut pedestal desk, by the world renowned cabinet maker, Gillow & Co, Circa 1880 in date. It is made from fabulous burr walnut, which has a the rectangular top inset with a fabulous green and gold tooled leather writing surface, the top features an elegant ogee moulded edge and the right hand frieze drawer bears the Gillows impressed stamp and the serial number 14102. It has an arrangement of nine graduated drawers with turned walnut handles and it stands on a plinth base. Instill the elegance of a bygone era to a special place in your home with this fabulous antique desk. With original working locks and key. Condition: In really excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned, polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Gillow’s of Lancaster was a household name in Victorian Britain, and the firm exported furniture throughout the Empire. Key to the company’s success was the dynamic father and son team at its core. The London branch was opened in 1775. Among Gillow’s most successful pieces during this period were those made in the Neoclassical style from original drawings by Robert Adam. In the period 1813-1820 the Gillow family gradually withdrew from personal involvement with the business. In 1897 Gillow & Co. merged with a Liverpool firm and they henceforth traded as Waring & Gillow. Burr Walnut refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.

This is a fine and very rare antique Victorian burr walnut twin pedestal partners desk, Circa 1860 in date. It is made from fabulous burr walnut, the rectangular top with a fabulous inset gold tooled green leather writing surface. One side has an arrangement of three drawers in the frieze over a pair of pedestals each with three graduated drawers, the other side has a central frieze drawer with a cupboard in each pedestal, each opens to a central shelf. The desk is fitted with the original turned walnut handles and it stands on a plinth base raised on brass castors. This is a beautiful antique Victorian flame mahogany and satinwood crossbanded pedestal partners desk, circa 1860 in date.
