About the Item

A Jaacues-Emile Ruhlmann style Art Deco writing table with a curved front and one drawer featuring a stunning amboyna burl top from France c.1930. This superb table follows the design of Jacques Emile Ruhlmann, one of the most influential designers of the early twentieth century. The writing table is in the shape of an arc standing on a pair of "U" shaped pedestals that each stand upon a rectangular platform edged with a band of brass. The creator of the table exhibited an extraordinary understanding of scale and pattern as the entire table is sheathed in exceptionally patterned sections of amboyna burl. The top of the table features six book matched cross sections of a walnut tree cut and placed to form six ovals. This technique enables the organic flow of the grain to move across the surface in a curved manner that would not be possible if the sections were circular in shape. Each of the two "U" shaped pedestals also are sheathed in striking sheets of highly figured timber on the inside while the rectangular bases not only have beautiful wood but each of the four sides of the rectangular base are sloped to provide structural support for the entire table in a very visually pleasing manner. The sloped profile echoes the sweeping feeling of the curves seen elsewhere on the table and reinforces the overall aesthetic of the design. The slender drawer in the front of the table retains its original working lock and key while the exterior of the drawer continues the same pattern of wood seen to its left and right. The writing table was conceived almost as a piece of working sculpture as it was always meant to be seen from all directions. The floating quality of the table is one of its strongest and most powerful attributes as it gives this piece the ability to stand alone or be incorporated into a wider interior design scheme.
