Art Deco Macassar Pedestal Desk in the Manner of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, 1930

$42,500

About

French Art Deco macassar ebony double pedestal desk in the manner of legendary Art Deco Parisian furniture and interior designer, Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. This very important and rare desk will be a focal point in any office with its geometric shape and and the deep rich macassar ebony that is beautifully streaked and mottled coming from the exotic city Makassar in the Eastern Indonesian islands. Macassar ebony is highly desirable due to overall its toughness and aesthetic appeal. The subtly curved geometric form flat top writing surface bring the piece alive as if breathing. Each pedestal containing four vertical drawers with bronze handle pulls with soft curves and stepped rings; open knee hole with slightly curved stretcher wrapped with seven bronze strap mounts; supported on four square tapering feet with wrap around bronze straps. This piece is truly a piece of art to showcase in your home, from the notorious design and rare wood to the exceptional unique mirror-like finish where you can actually see your own reflection. Art Deco design brings the luxury and glamour of the roaring 20's to the 21st century. With its bold geometry and use of exotic woods it is exquisite creating a contrast in an antique setting or complimenting modern and contemporary interiors. Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (1879-1933), legendary Parisian furniture and interior designer, major contributor to the Art Deco period. Notorious for his style, a mix of drama and fragility, using delicate lines and subtle curves. He favored exotic woods such as Macassar Ebony and Brazilian Rosewood to create a gentle striking background which would not compete with the shapely geometric form of the furniture, often using embellishments such as bronze and ivory. He was inspired from the classical elements and superb craftsmanship from 18th century furniture. Not only were his designs purchased by the "elite" of that period, such as the Rothschilds and Renaults; but they were also decorated several rooms of the Élysée Palace (The official residence of the President of France) and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Ruhlmann famously quoted in 1920 for a magazine review “A clientele of artists, intellectuals and connoisseurs of modest means is very congenial, but they are not in a position to pay for all the research, experimentation and testing that is needed to develop a new design; only the very rich can pay for what is new and they alone can make it fashionable. Fashions doesn’t start among the common people. Along with satisfying a desire for change, fashion’s real purpose is to display wealth.”; “Whether you want it or not, a style is just a craze. Fashion does not come up from humble backgrounds.”
