They often work from home and wanted us to make the perfect working table. Together we went through our collection of rare wood and we decided on a matching pair of slabs from about a hundred years old. The wood is Chicken-Wing, (Ji-chi Mu in Chinese). That particular wood has been extremely sought after in China since the Ming dynasty. Scholars loved to have objects or furniture made in this magnificent wood, whose grain looks like the feathers of a bird when viewed up close, hence the name. Very often these scholars collected objects referring to nature or made with natural materials: wooden brush pots, pencil rests, water droppers…They also collected dream-stones: beautiful slabs of stone with an intricate pattern set in a carved frame. These nature-made patterns were very meditative. One could imagine wild landscapes, seascapes, clouds…It was for this reason that chicken wing wood was highly valued: the distinct grain has a similar affect…One can easily dream away. Perhaps not the best choice for a working-table…? We designed a system to hold their computer cables and drilled a simple grummet hole in the top. Our clients selected a pair of Sand-cast aluminium bases and opted for a ‘charcoal’ finish. P. Tendercool, run by Belgians Pieter Compernol and Stephanie Grusenmeyer, is based in Bangkok, Thailand. Stephanie comes from a family of Antique dealers and for over a decade has been collecting truly unique slabs of antique hardwood. We estimate that about 95% of these wonderful slabs we collected over a period of 10 years are about one hundred years old. Inspection of the bottom parts show they were clearly cut by hand, pre-machine age... There are never any traces of legs, nor is there ever any carving, just slabs of amazing harwood. The fact that these wooden slabs still exist is proof of their stone-hard quality, we are not talking pine-wood here: many decades of humid-hot, termite-infested surroundings have had no noticeable effect other than them remaining solid witnesses of a bygone era. They typically have a one-person size: around two-meter long, by about 75-80 cm wide. We almost always find them in pairs: his and hers, Ying and Yang. Which wood? By far the larger number of slabs in our collection is Chicken-Wing wood, coveted and cherished by many Chinese as 'Jichimu' since the grain of this wood variety resembles the feathers of a bird. Next to Zitan & Huang-Huali wood, Jichimu has enjoyed a wide following and furniture made with this rare wood has been avidly collected since to the Ming-dynasty. We currently own two hundred slabs, available for selection in our workshop, just across our gallery in Bangkok. We do not know of anyone who has such a large collection of aged slabs as ours. Unfortunatly the secret is out: we now have to pay double to triple the price we paid only a couple of years ago. Collectables As former Antiques dealers we are convinced that our ATOP collection will be 'Antiques' to future generations: the wood is already extremely rare and about a hundred years old, the bases sand-cast by hand, and we will let you be the judge of the strength of the design ;) Reason why every table created will receive our burnt-in logo and its unique number stamped at the bottom. We are not discussing 'limited series here', every single table is unique. Perfect tables? Nope. All our ATOPs are imperfect and we would not have it any other way. Each slab has had a life before P. Tendercool, many generations lived with these slabs, leaving their marks. Slabs are never hyper straight and often are a little warped or show some minor cracks. We have been shipping worldwide since 2009 and never, ever, had any complaint, reason why we suggest our clients not to bother with insurance, but this is your call eventually: in our experience as former antiques-dealers, insurance company charge a premium and turn in Kafkaesque red-taped bureaucrats whenever a claim is filed... Important notes Wood finish We have yet to come across The Perfect Wood-Finish. Prior to establishing P.Tendercool in 2009 our family had been antique dealers for over 50 years. We know a thing or two about Old Wood. Eli, our antiques restorer from Belgium, flew over to train our Thai carpenters in traditional Western wood-finishing-techniques. While we can offer Wax, home-made Hot-wax and are experts in the age-old French Polishing, about 95% of our clients prefer an oil finish. Should you be looking for a completely waterproof finish, you may opt for Water-based Polyurethane. All finishes have pros and cons, feel free to enquire for more detail. But fear not: No white gloves are needed to enjoy your furniture! Our furniture is meant to be enjoyed, used and abused. Just apply your common sense: do not let spilled liquids sink in over-night, do not place hot pots and pans directly on the wood. Should you consider buying one of our creations we will explain in detail about the do's and don'ts. Sand cast bronze, brass and aluminium We are wood-specialists. We outsource the casting of our metals to a true Bronze-master: Armando is an Italian who used to work for Salvador Dali way back when...Craft any-one? He moved his foundry from Monza, Italy to Thailand now 30 years ago. His major client is the Vatican. We are truly blessed. He is currently training our team so his vast experience will live on. Please note that the sand-casting process is also completely done by hand, step-by-step, for each base: a traditional and time consuming technique which, as the woodwork we offer, can never be 'Perfect': our bases show traces of this technique: some air-bubbles remain in the metal, some weld-marks will be visible as will some tooling traces: brushed lines, some surfaces will be a bit more matte than others... Here too you will feel Real People's hands... Photos We take great care when we photograph our creations or produce our samples, but computer monitors differ, colors may not be exactly rendered and BLTs are created by hand, not by Robots. Do check with us should you have any doubts. You are always welcome to pay us a visit, both our gallery and workshop are open to the public.
