Charles X Desk by Alphonse Giroux & Cie, Paris, circa 1820

About the Item

An elegant desk resting on tall, tapered legs with a straight apron, intricately inlaid with fine acanthus leaves and scrolling vine motifs, framed by delicate string inlays. This exquisite decoration continues onto the tabletop, where symbolic representations highlight the craftsmanship and artistic significance of the piece: on the left, a painter’s palette symbolizes art, while on the right, a compass and triangle represent architecture. The tabletop is divided in the center and can be released via a push mechanism, allowing for height adjustment—a testament to both functionality and design ingenuity. The writing surface is covered in brown leather with a gold-tooled border, adding a refined touch. The lock is inscribed with "chez Alph. Giroux et Cie à Paris", a mark of exceptional Parisian craftsmanship from the 19th century. The firm Alphonse Giroux et Cie was active until 1867, while its founder Alphonse Giroux I lived from 1775/76 until 1848. His son took over in 1838.
