All Hands On Desk“ desk with 24 hands, 2024 Johanna Pichlbauer, Clemens Schmidberger Size 1850 x 850 x 745 mm (excl. hands) Size 1860 x 860 x 750 mm (incl. hands) Solid Softwood veneered (veneer by Alpi, designed by Sottsass), mat lacquered 24 Corner Pieces by Johanna Pichlbauer, cast brass metal (cast by Loderer), silvered The desk was commissioned by Becca Hoffman and 74th Arts as a center piece for the exhibition „Projekt: Berggasse 19“, which took place in June 2024 in Vienna and proposed a contemporary interior concept for the historical client Sigmund Freud. In an almost neurotic fashion, the desk is designed to have many corners, to showcase Johanna Pichlbauer’s corner hands. She says about these: „Like many adults who share their furniture with a child, I’ve become sensitive to sharp edges and corners at a certain height and developed a reflex to cover them with my hands to avert drama. So here’s my attempt to translate these little acts of care into table accessories.“ Produced in the same workshop as the famous Auböck hands, Johanna Pichlbauer’s hands are humorous eyecatchers on the red desk. The desk, built by Clemens Schmidberger ist made of solid softwood with a dyed veneer toplayer. All surfaces and egdes were veneered by hand and the drawer fronts, although single pieces, offer a continuous veneer grain. It features eight drawers made of solid oak wood with state-of-the-art runner systems in different widths, ranging from 546 to 146 millimeters. The Designers: Clemens Schmidberger combines, in his work, the technical and aesthetic qualities of wood-making objects of high-quality craftsmanship. Johanna Pichlbauer explores our emotional relationships with objects, technologies and each other. She produces playful interventions and poetic objects, offering a comic and sensual view of society’s challenges. Curators’ statement on the exhibition: PROJEKT BERGGASSE 19 A contemporary interior concept for a historical client an exhibition by Alice Stori Liechtenstein and Johanna Pichlbauer Conscious of how furniture and interiors reflect a period and a state of mind, we have selected a number of contemporary pieces by Austrian and international designers to inspire a new reading of Freud and his oeuvre. We chose the furniture and decorative objects intuitively, guided by their inherent ambiguity as objects and the diverse narratives they encapsulate. Whether rooted in historical context, echoing Freudian principles, or evoking a subtle resonance with his work, every piece invites a deeper exploration through psychoanalysis. Against the backdrop of Freud's office, steeped in symbolism and meaning, these chosen pieces serve as catalysts for inspiration and critique. In his book "Freuds Dinge", Lothar Müller explains how Freud upgrades the objects around him to precious matter for interpretation. A window left open, a vase placed at the centre of a table, a straw hat "of peculiar shape": things charged with symbolism serve as requisites in Freud's work. Similarly, the furniture inhabiting his study and treatment room carries an agenda of its own: the couch invites the patients into a cosy haze that blurs the boundaries of night and day, of sitting and lying; the oriental carpets - fashionable at the time - absorb sound and light, creating a solemn atmosphere in the room; the shelves with countless antiques display Freud's passion for collecting, while also feeding the dreamer's subconscious.
