English Antique Victorian Gothic Carved Oak-Leaf Writing Library Table Desk

NEO-GOTHIC CARVED OAK-LEAF WRITING TABLE England, ca. 1880 Item # 311PZH09A A brilliant library writing table from the last quarter of the 19th century, this vividly carved and intelligently conceived design features primary surfaces of oak and oak veneers throughout. These have richly patinated and the historical surface absolutely glows after well over a hundred years of grime, rubbing, waxing and wear. The simple top is loosely octagonal with an intricately carved naturalistic border of oak leaves, this projecting slightly over the apron with its mixture of Gothic Arches and Steeples against the intensely naturalistic motifs of various foliage. Even the fleur-de-lis in the stretcher is exquisitely decorated with an intricately veined leaf and outwardly curling foliage while all of the column capitals are exquisitely developed displays of nature. The legs are robust with beveled corners and lamb's tongue terminals joined together on either side with a substantial pierced fretwork, the four legs locked together with an angular stretcher and all four raised over original caster wheels. The center of the apron holds a single full-width drawer retaining its original cast bronze hanging pulls in a circular form of opposing sea monsters. It is such a well-balanced and interesting design, but together with the rich worn surface it is positively magnetic. An absolute treasure. Measurements: 30" H x 32" D x 54 1/4" W Condition Report: Old historical surface with lightening along the front where it would be most frequently used, various scarring/ink stains/blemishes to the top throughout; joint seams and separations from shrinkage over time throughout; stretcher has metal supports added to the underside to supplement the joints; drawer frame tightened in the back corners with screws added, and bottom board with applied batten to tighten up the seam; other various minor restorations; various nicks, chips, wear and losses throughout. Retaining all original hardware and casters. Overall the table presents beautifully, is perfectly functional and sturdy.
