English Victorian Ministerial mahogany desk 15 drawers, circa 1860, scrivania
About the Item
Antique ministerial desk.
English mahogany office desk with 15 drawers, dating back to the mid-Victorian period, circa 1860.
Construction of the highest quality and proportion for this Victorian desk displaying an aged patina in excellent condition, enhanced with a total of 15 mahogany drawers.
Retractable desk covered in leather (various stains and signs of wear) of easy dimensions, reachable by opening the flap. The flap, with lock and key present, also hides three document drawers. The three drawers in the highest part open only when the desk top is open, otherwise they are blocked with a mechanical safety system. One of the drawers of the side structure hides a secret compartment, which can be opened using a hidden lock (key present).
The desk is also finished on the back, so it was created as a center desk that can be positioned in the middle of the room.

Notes
Under the influence of Marie Antoinette, French artists began to draw inspiration from the 18th-century archaeological discoveries made in the Mediterranean during the time of Louis XVI. After the Revolution of 1789, under the Consulate of Napoleon Bonaparte (1799-1804), the Egyptian campaign drew even more attention to one of the cradles of civilizations.
The "retour d'Egypte" style culturally and artistically had great success in France and Europe and reached as far as Russia; but much of this "Egyptomania" was politically driven to divert attention from the military failure of this campaign (defeat at Abukir, destruction of the French fleet by Admiral Nelson). The peak of this style's success was reached when the book "voyages dans le Basse et la Haute Egypte pendants les campagnes du general Bonaparte" by Dominique Vivant Denon...
