About the Item

A Very fine French 19th century Louis XV Style Ormolu-Mounted Kingwood, Satinwood and Fruitwood Parquetry Kidney-Shaped secrétaire de dame (Lady's desk or writing table) with an enamel dial clock and Candelabra, attributed to Théodore Millet "Maison Millet". The Rococo style 'Bonheur Du Jour' secretary with rounded back and sides with a sun-burst parquetry design, with two upper drawers below a circular clock with Roman numerals, flanked on each side by a pair of twin-light candelabra and faux-drawer door compartments, with a leather top that slides outwards, the apron fitted with three drawers; raised on four cabriolet legs applied with corner foliage ormolu sprays terminating in scroll sabots. The candelabra are electrified. Circa: Paris, 1890-1900. This beautifully designed Rococo style lady's secretary cabinet, probably by the Parisian ébéniste Théodore Millet "Maison Millet" is typical of the firm’s high quality and inventive production in the late 19thcentury. Founded in 1853 by his father, the Maison Millet won many awards at international exhibitions such as the Médaille d'or at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle, a Grand prix in 1900 and three Diplômes d'Honneur. Whilst his work is synonymous with the firms of Zwiener and Linke, sculptor Léon Messagé’s (1842-1901) Overall Height (To top of light-bulb): 54 inches (137.2 cm) Height (top of ormolu candelabra): 46 inches (116.8 cm) Width: 47 1/2 inches (120.7 cm) Depth: 25 3/8 inches (64.5 cm)

A Very Fine and Large French 19th Century Louis XV Style Ormolu Mounted Tulipwood Three-Drawer Bureau Plat - After a model by Joseph Baumhauer (died 1772) - Attributed to Paul Sormani (French-Italian 1817-1877). The serpentine shaped rectangular top enclosing a gilt tooled burgundy leather writing surface (worn) within a molded border above a long central drawer flanked by two drawers, with scrolled ormolu drawer-pulls, ormolu floral encadrements and acanthus corners co-raised on elegant cabriolet legs. A very fine and large French 19th century Louis XV style ormolu-mounted mahogany and kingwood three-drawer bureau plat attributed to Paul Sormani (French-Italian 1817-1877). The shaped rectangular top enclosing a gilt tooled brown leather writing surface within a molded border above a long central drawer enclosing a fine modeled mask of Hercules wearing the Nemean lion pelt centered by flat cast encadrements and rosewood veneered a quatre faces flanked by two short drawers with reticulated escutcheons of scantly clad frolicking putti and doves over gadrooned "C" scrolls, trellis patterned panels on a stylized shell within similarly framed encadrements raised on elegant cabriole legs surmounted by bearded satyr masks ending in acanthus case hairy paw feet beneath sides centering bacchic masks. Lock mechanism stamped W S M, 6068, a key (lacking skeleton key), and 148. Veuve Paul Sormani Et Fils was the widow of the highly esteemed furniture maker Paul Sormani (French-Italian 1817-1877). After his death around 1877 she and her son took over the management of the company continuing the tradition of producing fine French furniture of the highest calibre. An escutcheon and several mounts were examined on the reverse, and each was found to have the bronze master model initials "SJ:. Blue chalk inscription on underside Glle 117, Paris, circa 1880.
