French Louis XV Style Inlaid Kidney Form Writing Desk, 19th Century

About the Item

An exquisitely crafted kidney form writing desk in the Louis XV taste, the desk is a vision of delicate and endlessly undulating lines. Having almost no hard angles, the design is magnetic and executed with precision. The open writing surface is backed by a single letter slot under a concave drawer that releases from the case with a button from within the letter slot - the steel release plate is impressed on the underside "V.P. Paris" with two crossed skeleton keys and numbered "34" on the end. A pair of finely chased and filed doré bronze candelabra flank the writing desk, each with intricate acanthus leafage and furls of foliage. The twisting stems that raise the candelabra were cast hollow to allow the electricity to flow directly to the candlestick without any wire visibility - note, these will have to be rewired, as the cords have been cut and we do not handle any rewiring projects at the shop. Below the writing surface are three drawers, each with mahogany secondary woods and very finely hand cut dovetails - the back edge of the bottom is secured on all drawers with a tiny steel screw. We removed the lock from the middle drawer and the inside is etched "F.L." inside of a hand with "13" impressed above it - this could possibly be referring to Francois Linké as the shop of origin. The cabriole legs each terminate in lion paw mounts. The workmanship in the desk is excellent: the intricate veneer work, inlays, marquetry work along the drawers - everything is exquisitely executed. For any serious collector of French furnishings, this is a very fine acquisition indeed. Measurements: 37" W x 22" D x 37" H; 29 1/4" H to the writing surface Condition Report: Veneer restorations throughout with a return and veneer loss to side of the front right leg. Minor surface wear throughout with light dings and abrasions as expected from use. Some veneer rippling from shrinkage over time. Cords are cut for the electrified candelabra and will need to be professionally rewired to be functional. We have 49 detailed images of this desk available
