About the Item

Neoclassical writing desk handmade in Italy in the late 1700s using walnut and peg construction. The writing desk features three overlay drawers with ogee edges and each drawer front is decorated with symmetrical string poplar inlay framed within thin inlay lines along the drawer front edges. The same pattern of inlay is repeated on the top, the sides of the apron, and on the back of the apron, where one can find faux drawers. The top is made of a single board nailed to the apron with square nails and pegs. The top shows some signs of use over time (pictured). The legs are tapered and secured to the apron with hand-made wooden pegs. Overall this is a beautiful writing desk, or Italian scrivania. Its proportions and decorations are delicate, despite being a very sturdy piece of furniture. Because of the faux drawers on the back and the decorations on the sides, this desk is the perfect piece for someone who is looking for an elegant table/desk that will be placed in the middle or a room, or that can be seen from all sides. The color and patina are fantastic, despite the few scratches and nicks. The knobs an are not original but work well with the style. Knee clearance is 53 cm 20.8 inches
