About the Item

This rustic artisan made pine writing table hails from the Auvergne region, a mountainous area in central France. Created by a goat herder in the seventeenth century while tending his sheep, this table is constructed of hand pegged mortise and tenon joinery. The top is secured to its elegantly curved legs by means of two notched splines that run the entire width of the table top allowing for the wood to expand and contract with changes in atmosphere. The legs are joined at both ends with wooden cross braces for additional stability. Two drawers slide underneath the top and feature rough cut dovetails and hand forged iron drop ring drawer pulls. A testament to quality construction despite its humble origins, this table is sure to lend authenticity to any interior. c. 1680.
